How to create a sustainable workplace as part of your next refit

11 / 07 / 2024

If you are planning to refit your workplace, it’s a great time to review your sustainability goals and the options available to you to create an eco-friendly environment. In fact, if your workplace is tired and dated, not only will undertaking a refit give it a brand-new and fresh look, but it will also contribute towards your business’s sustainability strategy.

As a business owner, facility manager, or decision-maker, you play a crucial role in creating a greener workplace. There are many ways to achieve this, and we’re here to guide you through some of the most popular eco-friendly refit options.

Choose more sustainable materials

The days of plastics, perspex, suede and synthetic cotton are becoming a thing of the past. Once a workplace design staple, they are being replaced with more environmentally friendly materials such as wood, organic cotton, linen and bamboo. These materials are ethically sourced and can also be manufactured responsibly and recycled.

Make the most of natural light

Letting more daylight into your workplace is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and improve mood, motivation, and productivity. Having fewer lights on will help you use less electricity. You could also install occupancy sensors, LED lighting, and dimming systems to help you reduce your energy consumption.

Letting sunlight beam into your workplace helps keep the space warmer, meaning you may reduce your heating use, too. Use windows, glass doors, and skylights to allow natural light to flow through.

Try to work with UK suppliers and manufacturers

Sourcing local suppliers and manufacturers can help reduce your impact on the environment by negating the need for overseas deliveries. You may also want to source suppliers that share your values and ethos when it comes to sustainability so you can be sure that your sustainable approach runs right through the supply chain.

Reuse and recycle

Before you begin stripping out your workplace ready for the refit, take a look around and see if anything can be reused or recycled. Wooden drawers or desks can be given a new lease of life with a little tender loving care, or chairs can be reupholstered to bring them up to date with your new look. You may also have other pieces of furniture that can be donated to your local charity to prevent them from going to landfill.

Consider renewable energy

Depending on your building and its position, you may be able to use renewable energy sources such as solar power. It may not power your entire workplace, but even if it can cover a portion of your energy consumption, it’s worth doing. Installing solar power may involve a significant investment initially, but the reduction in energy bills will soon help you see a return on your investment.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY?

I can highly recommend Denis and his team if you are looking for a reliable, professional and excellent contractor to deliver on time and what you require. They recently completed a large refurbishment of rooms, studios and common areas (Kitchens) at the property I work at and this was delivered on time and to an excellent finish and at the same time providing a very good level of support once completed, any issues or snagging completed quickly as and when required

Milkris Interiors carried out our £2 million refurbishment to our hotel the Holiday Inn Express London Stratford which was completed early 2019. Denis and his team were thoroughly professional throughout the works. As the hotel remained open they were duly sensitive to the guests needs and completed the job with minimal disturbance. They worked speedily and efficiently completing the works on time even though we had a challenging timetable and needed to make amendments during the works. Denis was always available to discuss progress and very easy to work with. His team are highly professional and hard working. I would definitely recommend Milkris Interiors to my colleagues.
